Despite this, the region still remains away from active mining. Whether this is a loss for the economy or, on the contrary, an environmental advantage, explained PhD in Geography, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at the Kotsiubynskyi VDPU <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"490\">Vladimir Kanskoy<\/strong> in a comment for <em data-start=\"507\" data-end=\"526\">Public Vinnytsia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"531\" data-end=\"572\"><strong data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"572\">Deposits and composition of subsoil in Vinnytsia region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"797\">Several promising fields have been identified in the region, including <strong data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"686\">Zelenoyarskoye titanium-zirconium<\/strong>The field is located in Orativsky district. Although it is officially included in the geological maps, it is not currently being developed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"1063\">The region's mineral resources are dominated by <strong data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"837\">titanium<\/strong> \u0456 <strong data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"852\">zirconium<\/strong> - metals required for the production of medical implants, military prostheses and nuclear power. Also, according to Kansky, in Vinnytsia region <strong data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1060\">there may be deposits of germanium, europium, neodymium and lithium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1231\">\"The likelihood of lithium being present is associated with the remains of the Sarmatian Sea. The salt deposits of Podillia may indicate the formation of its deposits,\" the scientist explained.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1292\"><strong data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1292\">How rare earth metals are mined<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1532\">Rare earth elements are not mined in their pure form - they are contained in minerals such as <strong data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1425\">quartz, feldspar or mica<\/strong>. To produce them, the ore is crushed to a state of microparticles, after which it undergoes complex chemical treatment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1684\">Out of 10 tonnes of raw materials, only <strong data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1592\">20-50 grams<\/strong> of valuable metal, so the process is extremely energy-intensive, expensive and hazardous to the environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1686\" data-end=\"1857\">Kanskoy emphasises that during grinding, ore particles can be released into the atmosphere and settle as \"dirty rain\", and the residues after processing are often toxic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"1910\"><strong data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1910\">Where rare earth elements are used<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"2123\">These metals are the backbone of the modern technology industry - they are used in <strong data-start=\"1989\" data-end=\"2083\">drones, wind turbines, electric motors, nuclear power, defence equipment, telecommunications<\/strong> and even artificial intelligence systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2218\">\"Without them, neither modern military systems nor the IT industry would exist,\" Kanskii said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2273\"><strong data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2273\">Global context: US and Chinese competition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2275\" data-end=\"2427\">According to the expert, today rare earth metals have become one of the key elements of <strong data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2424\">global technological confrontation between the US and China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2623\">China began actively developing its own deposits in the 1950s and now controls most of the world's production. Even American companies often send ore to China for processing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2625\" data-end=\"2782\">Ukraine, according to analysts, could become <strong data-start=\"2671\" data-end=\"2711\">a new source of strategic raw materials<\/strong> for the West, helping to reduce dependence on Chinese resources.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2855\"><strong data-start=\"2788\" data-end=\"2855\">Production in Ukraine: difficult, expensive, but strategically necessary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"3123\">Exploration and development of rare earth metal deposits require significant financial and technological resources. For a long time, Ukraine has not invested in this area due to the high cost of geological work, although the potential of its subsoil is estimated at <strong data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3120\">over $15 trillion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3125\" data-end=\"3387\">About. <strong data-start=\"3133\" data-end=\"3149\">70% deposits<\/strong> of such metals are located in the East and South-East of Ukraine, in the areas where military operations are currently underway. The most important deposits are <strong data-start=\"3288\" data-end=\"3297\">lithium<\/strong>used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles and electronics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3443\"><strong data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"3443\">Will Vinnytsia region benefit from the absence of mining?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3445\" data-end=\"3548\">Although Vinnytsia region's reserves are among the most modest in Ukraine, the expert believes that <strong data-start=\"3520\" data-end=\"3545\">environmental benefits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3550\" data-end=\"3742\">\"Mining of such metals is accompanied by huge waste, soil and water pollution, and the formation of toxic tailings. This is harmful to both nature and human health,\" emphasises Kansky.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3744\" data-end=\"3951\">According to him, during the development of the fields <strong data-start=\"3786\" data-end=\"3814\">the soil layer is destroyed<\/strong>and the use of large amounts of water can lead to <strong data-start=\"3872\" data-end=\"3902\">disappearance of springs and wells<\/strong>, microclimate change and biodiversity loss.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3953\" data-end=\"3991\"><strong data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"3991\">Subsoil agreement: chance or risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3993\" data-end=\"4262\">Commenting on the latest international agreements in the field of subsoil use, Kanskoy notes that <strong data-start=\"4085\" data-end=\"4153\">Ukraine would have come to the need to develop these resources anyway<\/strong>. Cooperation with the United States can provide access to technology, joint financing, and advanced geological exploration.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4264\" data-end=\"4378\">However, it is possible that <strong data-start=\"4287\" data-end=\"4355\">part of the information on Ukrainian reserves will remain classified<\/strong> for security reasons.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4380\" data-end=\"4575\">\"This is not only a matter of economy, but also of national security. And it is not a given that local communities will agree to extraction if they realise that they may lose water or fertile land,\" Kanskii concluded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4577\" data-end=\"4733\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Thus, <strong data-start=\"4590\" data-end=\"4642\">\"Silence of the subsoil\" in Vinnytsia region may turn out to be a blessing<\/strong> -
